And the excitement of competing horses
Can
be YOURS when you become a VOLUNTEER for the
Marlborough Horse Trials.
The
Marlboro Horse Trials is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated
to eventing and equestrian activities. To this end we have developed
and maintain open space at the Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro.
We host one major "three phase" event in the fall, with
clinics, schooling days and other equestrian activities during the
year.
A
variety of volunteer jobs are available.
WOODSMAN: preparing the terrain and clearing the courses for
action. This is a year round maintenance activity culminating in
September when the trials are held.
COURSE DECORATOR: enhancing the cross country and stadium obstacles
with seasonal flowers, greenery, produce and other artifacts. Actually
transforming the wooden elements into a decorative feature. A lot
of fun for those with creativity.
JUMP JUDGE: Armed with a 'walkie talkie' and score sheets charts
the progress of the competitor and horse over the jump element assigned
to you. You will be briefed and will have written instructions.
You will also be taken care of with lunch and drinks throughout
the day, (as will all the volunteers). Sit (bring your own folding
chair) and enjoy the excitement right there on course.
STARTER: Sends the horse and rider out on the course for the
cross country phase-----5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO. Start the stop watch
and record the start and finish times. Be part of the action.
STEWARD: All three phases need organizing! Warm up, 'you're
on deck', equipment check, gate personnel, hold a horse, reset warm
up jumps and so much more. A really hands on job.
SCRIBE: Sitting alongside the dressage and stadium judges to
record comments, scores and times. Watch the horse perform dressage
movements guided with subtle aids from the rider. Be part of the
action of the stadium jumping course where there are thrills and
spills.
SCORER: Working with information supplied by the dressage, cross country and stadium judges calculate current scores and times for each contestant. Your computer skills will help us keep the scoring accurate and prompt. The scoring area has an excellent view of the cross country jump action
HOST/HOSTESS: Look after the volunteers who are at their posts.
Ride around in an ATV with drinks, food, relief stints and generally
be a friend to all! See all the phases underway.
There
are many other volunteer opportunities. To find out more about then
and also about us please call any of the people named below. We
will be eager to fill you in and answer any questions.
